Day 24 – God Makes a Way
“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19
After several days of waiting, wondering, and trusting, today was a beautiful reminder that God is always working behind the scenes—even when we can’t yet see the answer.
With nowhere we needed to be this morning, Melvin and I both enjoyed sleeping in. I woke up a little before him, poured myself a hot cup of coffee, toasted a slice of bread with jam, and settled into the truck camper to continue editing the next YouTube video from our adventure.
Yesterday, Melvin realized he still needed a chain rivet tool to complete the repairs on his motorcycle. It felt like a long shot, but I decided to post in an Alaska Adventure Rider Facebook group to see if anyone in the North Pole area might happen to have one.
To my surprise, a man named James responded almost immediately.
Not only did he have the chain rivet tool, but after I gave him Melvin’s phone number, he called and said something we never expected to hear. He had the exact front and rear sprockets, a brand-new chain, and even had time on a Sunday to replace everything in his own garage.
Our prayers had been answered in a way only God could orchestrate.
We quickly got ready, and Melvin carefully rode the bike while Mark and I followed behind in the truck. James lived only a few miles away.
When we arrived at his shop, Last Frontier Motorcycle Adventure, we were amazed. Adventure motorcycles filled the garage, and as we looked around, we discovered he even rides a Honda Africa Twin just like Melvin’s! We talked as if we’d known each other for years. James shared how he rents adventure motorcycles during Alaska’s riding season, and we couldn’t help but laugh as we said, “Maybe next year we’ll just fly out and rent bikes!”
His generosity didn’t stop there. He even offered to let Melvin borrow one of his motorcycles while he completed the repairs. We graciously declined since Mark had already planned to drive us back home, but we were deeply touched by such incredible kindness from someone we had met only moments before.
As we drove away, we sat in amazement.
What were the odds that a complete stranger would have every single part we needed, the special tool, the knowledge to do the repair, and the willingness to spend his Sunday helping two stranded travelers?
The answer wasn’t luck.
It was God.
There are no coincidences with our Heavenly Father. Time and time again throughout this journey, He has reminded us that He already knows our needs before we ever ask. He simply invites us to trust Him enough to pray and watch Him work.
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” — Exodus 14:14
Back at Mark’s house, I fired up the grill and cooked burgers while warming baked beans and corn. It was one of the most relaxing meals we’ve had all week. The heavy burden we’d been carrying—the uncertainty of being stranded—had finally been lifted.
Just as we finished eating, Melvin’s phone buzzed.
James had sent a message.
“The bike is ready.”
Wow!
We hurried back to his shop, overflowing with gratitude. We thanked him over and over for giving up part of his Sunday to help us. As we talked more, we learned he originally came from California and had lived throughout much of the lower 48 before finally settling in Alaska. He smiled as he told us he had found home and had no desire to live anywhere else.
When Melvin climbed back on the bike for the ride home, he couldn’t stop smiling.
“It feels like a brand-new motorcycle,” he said.
God had provided exactly what we needed.
With the repair behind us, we started rearranging our travel plans once again, hoping we could still enjoy at least one day near Denali. I called Alpine Creek Lodge to see if they could adjust our reservation one more time, and once again they graciously accommodated us. Then I contacted Denali National Park to let them know we’d be arriving a day later than planned, and they happily noted our reservation.
One by one, every piece was falling back into place.
It reminded me that sometimes God delays our plans, not to deny us His blessings, but to prepare something even better. His timing is always perfect, even when it doesn’t match our own.
Excited to finally be back on schedule, I began packing everything we wouldn’t need overnight so we could simply hop on the motorcycles in the morning and head out. Once everything was loaded, we rode to the gas station to top off both bikes.
While we were there, we met two gentlemen visiting Alaska from Germany with their wives. One of them admired my BMW and proudly shared that BMW motorcycles are built in Germany.
“That is a very well-built motorcycle,” he said with a smile, “and very expensive in my country.”
Before we parted ways, Melvin handed each of them a Gospel tract. Even during a quick stop for fuel, God provided another opportunity to plant seeds of hope.
The weather couldn’t have been more beautiful—sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s. It had been a full week since we had ridden together on our own motorcycles, and simply being back on the bike filled us with excitement for what lay ahead.
Back at our home base, we cleaned our windshields and finally had time to place the stickers we’d been collecting on our panniers. Each sticker tells a story, each one representing another place God has faithfully carried us.
Everything was finally ready.
The open road was calling once again.
With a little time left before evening, I went inside the camper to finish editing my video while Melvin and Mark enjoyed one last campfire together. It was bittersweet knowing this would be our final night staying with our dear friend. Over the past week, Mark has become much more than a host—he has become family.
There wasn’t a late-night campfire tonight. Morning would come early. Mark had to be at work by 6:00 a.m., and we planned to leave around 8:00.
Before turning in for the night, we hugged each other tightly and said our goodbyes. You could tell this week had been special for all of us. Although it was hard to leave, it wasn’t goodbye forever. Lord willing, we’ll see Mark again when he returns to New York in September.
As we crawled into bed one final time in North Pole, Alaska, our hearts were overflowing with gratitude. What began as an unexpected breakdown had become another testimony of God’s faithfulness. He used delays to introduce us to new friends, deepen old friendships, strengthen our trust, and remind us once again that He is always writing a better story than we could ever plan ourselves.
“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act.” — Psalm 37:5
Tomorrow, our adventure resumes as we ride out of town on the Old Denali Highway toward Alpine Creek Lodge. We don’t know exactly what awaits us around the next bend, but we do know this:
The same God who carried us through the delay will go before us on the road ahead.
