God’s Provision Along the Alaska Highway
We had a wonderful night’s rest in our cozy cabin at Sikanni River Campground. I made coffee and oatmeal for breakfast while Melvin packed the bikes. After cleaning up the cabin, we were back on the road by 8:00 a.m. The skies were clear, and it looked like it was going to be a beautiful day for riding.
Today would be one of our shorter riding days—only 312 miles to Liard River Hot Springs Campground. With both bikes topped off with fuel, we were able to ride for a couple of hours before making our first stop. We pulled into Fort Nelson and enjoyed coffee and bagels at Tim Hortons.
While fueling up, we met a really interesting biker who had his dog riding on the back of his Harley while towing a small tent trailer. Melvin shared a Bible and a Gospel tract with him and mentioned that we ride with the Christian Motorcycle Association. He smiled and replied, “Oh, you’re those Christian guys I see at all the bike rallies!” We all laughed and told him, “Yes, we love riding too!”
From there we continued north on Historic Route 97, the Alaska Highway. As we climbed into the Northern Rocky Mountains, the scenery became more breathtaking with every mile. Around every curve, another spectacular view unfolded before us.
When we reached the summit, I honestly think it was one of the most incredible places I have ever seen. The descent was absolutely unforgettable. The road twisted gracefully down the mountainside, revealing endless views across the vast Rocky Mountain valleys below. I truly hope the footage from my action cameras captures even a fraction of how magnificent today’s ride really was.
About halfway down the mountain, we stopped in Toad River for fuel—and of course, ice cream! While we were there, we met two fellow riders from Washington, D.C., and enjoyed chatting with them before they continued on their journey.
As we continued descending, we rode alongside beautiful Muncho Lake. The brilliant turquoise water stretched alongside the highway, tucked beneath towering mountains. The road followed the shoreline, making it feel as though we were riding through a postcard. It was simply breathtaking.
Eventually we left the Alaska Highway and turned onto Route 93 toward Liard River Hot Springs. In the distance we could see dark rain clouds, and before long we found ourselves riding in the rain once again. Along the way we spotted a magnificent ram and two bison grazing near the roadside. Thankfully, our destination was only about 30 minutes away.
The rain let up just long enough for us to get our tent set up. We enjoyed leftovers for dinner inside the tent as the rain began falling again. Later that evening we decided to walk over to the famous hot springs for a relaxing soak.
As we approached the entrance, I noticed three familiar adventure motorcycles parked nearby. They were the same riders we had seen the day before in Grande Cache! The men were sitting under a tarp, staying dry from the rain. I walked over and asked, “Didn’t we see you guys yesterday?”
They immediately recognized us and invited us to sit down. Melvin mentioned that he had started hearing a strange noise coming from his motorcycle earlier that day and asked if they would mind taking a quick look at it.
Without hesitation, they jumped right in to help. Within minutes, one of them found the problem. The bolt and nut that secure the rear axle had loosened. In no time at all they had everything tightened up and fixed.
What an incredible reminder of God’s faithfulness.
Out of all the places along thousands of miles of highway, God allowed our paths to cross with these men two days in a row—right when we needed help the most. That wasn’t luck. That was God’s perfect provision. Once again, we were reminded that He is always watching over us and orchestrating details we could never plan ourselves.
Finally, we made it into the hot springs, even though the rain had started again. Soaking in the warm mineral water was exactly what our tired bodies needed after another full day on the road.
While relaxing in the springs, we met a couple who had competed in the Baja race in Mexico. We enjoyed hearing about their adventures while sharing about our own mission and journey to Alaska. Encounters like these continue to remind us that every person God places in our path is an opportunity to share His love through simple conversations, kindness, and genuine fellowship.
The rain continued throughout the evening as we walked back to camp. Tired, wet, and thankful, we finished charging our electronics, downloaded the day’s video footage, and wrote today’s blog.
Tomorrow will be another big day on the bikes with over 400 miles to Whitehorse. With grateful hearts, we climbed into our tent and settled in for a good night’s rest, excited to see what God has planned for the next leg of this incredible adventure.
