Day 2 of our 66-day journey to Alaska began with a wonderful blessing—a delicious homemade breakfast prepared by my niece before we loaded up the bikes and hit the road. With full stomachs and grateful hearts, we set off for another day of adventure.
The weather greeted us with clear skies, but the strong winds from yesterday were still hanging around. We spent much of the day making miles along the Pennsylvania and Ohio Turnpikes, enjoying the scenery while battling the gusty conditions.
Not every trip goes exactly as planned, and today was no exception. While stopped for fuel at a rest area, a powerful gust of wind caught Gracie, our BMW F750GS, and knocked her over. Thankfully, the damage was minor, but the rear brake lever was broken. Every adventure seems to come with a few unexpected challenges, and this was one of ours.
Despite the setback, we pressed on toward Sanford, Michigan, where we had arranged to stay with a Bunk-A-Biker host, Shirley and Scott. What a blessing that turned out to be! They graciously welcomed us and gave us full use of their garage. Not long after we arrived, a thunderstorm rolled through the area, and thanks to their hospitality, we didn’t have to set up our tent in the pouring rain.
For dinner, I kept things simple, cooking rice and chicken on our JetBoil. The evening was spent getting to know Shirley and her son, sharing stories, laughter, and the kind of conversations that make travel so meaningful.
We often say that it’s not just about the destination or even the adventure itself—it’s about the people you meet along the way. Shirley and her son were incredibly kind and welcoming, and we are thankful our paths crossed.
As the day came to a close, we settled into our evening routine of charging electronics, organizing gear, and uploading GoPro footage. I’m hoping to find some downtime soon to begin editing videos and sharing our journey on our YouTube channel.
Thank you for following along with us as we travel north toward Alaska. We look forward to sharing more stories from the road—the people we meet, the places we discover, and the ways we see God’s hand at work throughout this incredible journey.
Until tomorrow,
Rochelle & Melvin
