Off-Grid Cabin

Our off-grid tiny house

In 2020, we embarked on an adventure of a life-time. We purchased about 40 acres off-grid. We decided to sell our house, and live in a camping trailer while we built a tiny house. It sounds pretty cool, I agree, but it wasn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination. First, who lives in a camper during the winter months in the Adirondacks? We did, and it was a long, cold winter without running water, or a hot shower. Yet, as each week passed, we focused on our plans to live differently than the world around us chooses to live. There is an amazing beauty to the quietness of the woods during the winter. Taking moonlit walks together gave way to the crisp air hitting our faces. The freshness of the glistening white snow would remain undisturbed by man. It became suddenly apparent that we were just guests living in the bedroom of God’s creation, where animals would meander through, wondering who we were. Soon, the air started to warm up in the early spring. The thick tree cover allowed the snow to linger into late May. Hope filled the air as the warmer days gave way to more sunshine. The permafrost was percolating through the wet and muddy ground. Yet in our haste we let the well driller down those muddy trails, only to be wedged into the soft earth below its massive weight. But at last we found water some 200 feet below. Summer is our riding season, so time to build was always scarce. The master craftsman hammered away through his sacred days and nights that were available. Slowly, a glimpse of this dream we had began to take shape. Then, the leaves began to change colors and temperatures started to drop. The painter filled the canvas with bright reds and yellow. High above the ground, looking around, the splendor is just breathtaking. The hunting season is over, and it is obviously clear, there was no more time to spare. We were both eager to not spend another year living in the camper out here. Christmas was nearing, and soon we had a warm place to go. All 288 square feet was better than gold.
